The Ballad of the BRG

1991 Miata SE

Ever since I got my Classic Red 91, I've been looking for another Miata. Not that I needed one, or didn't like the one I had. My Red's a great car, even with the automatic transmission. But there are other Miatas I've lusted after since seeing them, and they have special names. Sunburst Yellow. 93 LE. 95-M. MSM. 10AE. And there is the 91 BRG.

BRG stands for British Racing Green. This was the very first Miata Special Edition, and was part of the later 91 production run. There were 3997 BRG 91's produced, each coming with a special plaque and a sequence number identifying each one uniquely. They were very similar to the standard Miata of that year, but came with the B-Package and added in a few other goodies like a tonneau cover, tan interior, leather seats and a Nardi wooden shift knob and e-brake handle. Oh, and it's in a beautiful dark British Racing Green.

I saw one of these at Miatas at the Gap last year and absolutely loved the color combination of that dark forest green with the tan interior. Mechanically, there is little separating my 91 from any other 91, but the color sets her apart and this is her story.

My BRG is number 3621. She came with 46,600 miles documented. She did not have the hard top, but she did come with the tonneau cover and top boot, owners manual and the good maintenance guide. The paint is great. The typical 17 year old car chips exist, but no rust and all the paint (except for the rear trim panel which always fades) is shiny, bright and luscious dark green.

The interior is tan leather. The only real blemishes are the driver seat which is torn at the seams and the dash board. Apparently a previous owner decided that instead of replacing the dashboard after it faded, he'd just pull it out and spray paint it black. So he did. At least he masked it properly and painted it OUTSIDE of the car. I'll have to replace those things one day.

I'm also missing the Special Edition badge that is supposed to display the sequence number of my new BRG. That's ok, I know where I can get one, and I'll be ordering that soon.

Mechanically, she's like a new car. Tight, quiet and runs without complaint. The clutch is good, the shifter is tight and the shocks and springs are still good. The exhaust is stock, but later this week I'm going to swap the Borla cat-back from my red 91 onto this one to give her more growl and a little better exhaust flow. She even keeps her fluids inside!

All in all, I am very happy with this car. Of course, this doesn't mean I love my red 91 any less. I just love this one differently. For now, my wife is going to drive the red one off and on to help keep miles off her Nissan. I, however, plan to get a helmet and introduce my red NA to the world of autocross.

The BRG? Well, who knows. Many adventures lie ahead.
