RavesThe Earth did not come to an end ... yet.If you're reading this, then two events of Earth Shattering and Life Ending proportions have come to pass with nary a hair lost in their wakes of death and destruction. The first of these is the opening of the new McDonald's on the Hwy 64 Bypass in Pittsboro. I read the cries of the many on the Chatham Chatlist in angered protest against McDs coming to town as person after person revealed their most intimate painful memories of how this mega-corporation had sewn the seeds of chaos in their lives. read more » Yay... Numbah One on Google! So I've been up for a VERY long time now. I tried to go to sleep last night, but didn't really drift off until after 1am. Then, at about 3:30am, Patches woke me up because she REALLY had to go out to fertilize my yard. I've been up ever since, running on 2 and a half hours of sleep, some caffinated tea, and a handfull of caffine pills. So what do I do when I get to work, in this horrible state of mind? I Google myself. I haven't done that in a while, so I thought, why not. Much to my surprise, I am now the number 1 result when you search for "Jeff Lane" on Google. Holy Crap! I am finally number one at SOMETHING! Ok... I know, big freakin' deal, but in my delirious sleep deprived state, I am very easily excitable, especially once the caffine pills start making me twitchy ;-) And to prove my newfound status as the number one Jeff Lane on the interwebs, I present to you a screen shot: HELLER AFFIRMED!!! The 2nd Amendment guarantees an Individual's right to bear armsAmerica... FUCK YEA! Today is a historic day. This morning, the Supreme Court ruled on the case of District of Columbia v. Heller. The case was brought to challenge the D.C. ban on handguns and their super restrictive rules on firearms in general, even preventing people from keeping firearms in their own homes for protection. This is monumental because this is the first time that the Supreme Court has ruled on the 2nd Amendment broadly. There was a previous case in 1939, but even then, the SCOTUS ruled only on the specifics of that case while avoiding the bigger argument regarding actual interpretation of the 2nd Amendment. The Amendment states: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." read more » Indiana Jones and the Crystal SkullIt's just after 3:00 am and I should be in bed. I'm not, however. In fact, I just got in. I stayed up late to catch the midnight showing of Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull at Southpoint tonight. I've gotta say, it was simply amazing, in my fanboy opinion at least. It has thrills, chills, laughs, action, adventure. It has EVERYTHING that makes Indiana Jones moves so great. Before I go on, you need to understand that by clicking on the Read More link, you WILL see spoilers. So, SERIOUS SPOILER ALERT!! SPOILERS AHEAD! IF YOU DON'T WANT TO HAVE THE MOVIE SPOILED FOR YOU, DO NOT READ THIS ARTICLE ANY FURTHER!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! read more » Christmas Magic...Ya know, this year has been a real bitch. So much absolute crap has happened to us that it's been really difficult to not just go ballistic. I've whined a bit about it here, and you must know that in order for me to really whine about something, it really has to be bothering me. I am one of those silent and tough kinda guys who keeps the cards close to the vest and all those other cliches. read more » Gettin Better at the BreweryAfter my last misadventure (see here) with the newly opened Pittsboro location of the Carolina Brewery, I was contacted by one of the managers who offered me a gift certificate to come back and try again. Well, of course I accepted! I can't turn away free food. Honestly though, I felt bad accepting a gift certificate from them, but greed won over and I accepted and Dana and I met for dinner at the Carolina Brewery. read more » Liviu Librescu: Heroism at Virginia TechThis story has been circulating around various news outlets regarding one of the professors at Tech who was killed Monday while trying to save the lives of his students. He escaped the Holocaust and built a career in Aerospace Engineering research and sadly lost his life as he tried to bar the door to his classroom while his students jumped out the windows to safety. This is from Fox News: JERUSALEM — A 76-year-old professor who survived the Holocaust was shot to death while saving his students from the Virginia Tech assailant, students said. Liviu Librescu, an internationally respected aeronautics engineer who taught at Virginia Tech for 20 years, saved the lives of several students by barricading his classroom door before he was gunned down in the massacre, according to e-mail accounts sent by students to his wife. read more » Let us to the Renaissance Faire!
Jeff becomes the Slayer . . . mostlySo I worked yesterday from 0830 to 2030. We've been pretty hectic lately. As of yesterday, we have three OSs in testing, and if you count 32bit and 64bit as seperate streams, thats 6 in test, and then multiply that by the nearly 30 differenet machine models we test on right now and that adds up to a lot of work for us all. read more » Happy VD 2007So here we are on another February 14 celebrating that most beloved of holidays, VD ... errr Valentine's Day. Of course, it's just Wednesday for me, being a guy who never got into the holiday and spent most of them alone anyway. Well, except for the one or two prior to getting married that were spent with some soul-sucking succubus, but that's a different story for a different day. Yes, today is the day that we all buy little pink things for our lovely ladies (or men, if that is your thing). Today we give all the little candy hearts, chocolate, dead flowers, balloons, stuffed animals and thin lacey things (or thin blonde things). Personally, I never had a use for today. It seems to be yet another overblown day promoted by the greeting card cartels to increase their bottom line and market share with little bits of dead tree professing in aborted poetry and prose our love or at least strong feelings for a stalking victim or secret lover or Mom. read more » |
