Pajiba is reporting that one thing that I had hoped would never get off the ground and one thing I hadn't heard of yet, may in fact still happen. Just further evidence that Hollywood has apparently run it's course, with the major picture houses seemingly unable to come up with anything original these days, while independent film makers continue to shine with some downright amazing cinema.
First, is the much-hoped-against remake of Romancing the Stone. The original, an 80's adventure classic featured Kathleen Turner as a romance writer who heads to Columbia to find her kidnapped sister. Along the way, she meets Michael Douglas, who is an adventurer. Part Alan Quartermaine, part mercenary, his character is what made the movie for me. The later sequal, Jewel of the Nile, was not quite as good, in my opinion, but it did have some good scenes thanks to Danny DeVito. Anyway, this project seemed to stall and then just fall by the wayside, as it should have, but recently, a new director was attached to the project, a man who is arguably one of the worst directors in Hollywood: Robert Luketic.
IMDB gleefully lists some of his masterpieces:
Legally Blonde (another movie that should have just died quietly)
Win a Date With Tad Hamilton (who actually SAW this?)
Monster-in-Law (yet another instant classic... I don't think so)
21 (had potential, but bad directing ruined what could have been a good movie)
The Ugly Truth (Yet another of those "Did anyone actually go see this" bombs)
the upcoming Killers (which has a startlingly familiar plot)
and he also wants to remake Barbarella. Really? Barbarella?
Well, I guess that's what you can expect from a guy who's first movie was called Titsiana Booberini; a charming little tale about a grocery store cashier and her newfound self confidence after discovering the amazing miracle of ... hair removal.
Yes, a movie about a girl that gets her lip lasered to be rid of her stache.
Stepping onward, there's a potential remake of another 80's movie, Overboard, the last of the 80's Kurt Russell / Goldie Hawn movies. Not much to say about that remake just yet, because it's still damn near stillborn, but there's still a chance that something could come of it.
